CHARACTERS The Mechanikals ´ eBook, ePUB or Kindle PDF Oes called The Mechanikals And when young Edwin acuires his special powers he is enlisted into their ranks to face the terrifying enemy John Dodds is one of the most promising new writers I have read for some time I highly recommend his work Michael Moorco. This is basically a story of good vs evil and the discovery by a poor orphan boy of his special powers and those of his friends There is a good twist in the plot towards the end of the book that most will not see coming The plot and characters were well thought out and the ending would seem to lead to a follow on book I d recommend this book to readers of all ages

REVIEW The MechanikalsThe Mechanikals

CHARACTERS The Mechanikals ´ eBook, ePUB or Kindle PDF En invisible airships undersea weapons and supernatural threatsand an orphaned factory apprentice Edwin Bryce thrown into a conflict on an unimaginable scale Only one force can stand against the terror and devastation facing their countrymen a group of her. reviewsmetaphorosiscom 2 starsEdwin an orphaned child factory worker in an alternate early 1900s England gets caught in a struggle between selkie evildoers and the Mechanikals valiant do gooders with odd powers The story plays out against the growing risk of war with Germania when one of the Mechanikals takes the boy under his wing as the group fight the selkies I m not really that much of a superhero guy my wife would agree but I like the occasional steampunk story and steampunk superheroes sounded interestingThe book starts well rapidly establishing locale era and a likable protagonist There were a few typos in the early pages but I try to be forgiving for indie authors and I liked the overall tone Unfortunately things went the wrong way The typos multiplied and morphed into grammatical errors The tone of the writing stayed strong but the plot got lost along the wayIt s one thing to miss a few typos Everyone does and even professionally publishededited work usually has a few Many than a few though and it starts to look like the author didn t care enough to look for them I m sorry to say that this book had uite a lot missing words repeated words incorrect words incorrect grammar you name it There was at least one every several pages which I count as far too many for reading pleasure and certainly too many to suggest that the book got a thorough edit I usually mark typos so that I can edit them out later but here I eventually gave up and only marked the egregious ones It was still uite a lot and it definitely got in the way of the story I m not even counting the content errors such as a dirigible s helium tanks that are somehow at risk from flame I put that aside as an unsignaled error by the protagonist rather than the author but eventually minor spoiler the tanks explode due to their hydrogen contentThe storytelling was good at the micro level The writing was smooth the environment was clear and I cared about the characters The main actors were decently rounded and distinguishableThe plot was not as effective Clearly the author is establishing the foundation for a series in which mysteries will gradually be revealed and adventures will occur That can work nicely However in this case far too little is revealed resulting in a bewildering mish mash of actions not linked by cause and effect We know broadly where the story is going but the steps to get there are a frustrating act of faith on the reader s part Little is resolved by the end of the book We ve learned a little about our protagonist s past but other threads are spliced in and simply left hangingThe early portions went well but by about page 70 of 212 I was pretty sure I d made a mistake in reading so far I hate to give up but by page 130 the rest was a long trudgeI do think there s something here the author has skill and vision but I see this as an early draft than a finished product and I m sorry to say that I can t recommend it

The Mechanikals by John Dodds is a wonderful Steampunk adventure The story follows the adventures of a young lad named Edwin who becomes an unwitting hero and part of an almost superhero type group of people called The Mchanikals The purpose of this group is to fend of the growing army of Selkies led by a villain known as Mr Asphyx while the general population thinks the country is going to war with just Germania Through the twists and turns of the story Edwin has to uestion everything he thought he ever knew and ultimately must decide which side to trust Each of the team members has a call name that they are better known by Alun is The Draughtsman Tamsin is Vulcania and Malcom in known as The Engineer Others in the group are know as The Architect Corin and the Cartographer Pat Each of them possesses a special ability and when Edwin is brought into the group he discovers that he too has a special ability granted by his special mechanical eye The cast of characters is uite varied and colorful and I appreciate the banter and relationships between them The setting is as you d expect a version of old London complete with dirigibles factories and of course fantastical steam powered contraptions which are uite spectacular
