KINDLE [The Silk Roads: A New History of the World] The scope of this book is immense taking us from the battles between Ancient Greece and Persia up to the present day It is both illuminating and depressing to be reminded that in the last 2000 plus years of human history so little has changedInternational trade has enriched us in the West and made the elites in other corners of the world very wealthy but with that wealth comes exploitation ineuality and the great game

characters The Silk Roads: A New History of the World Peter Frankopan ✓ 4 Free download characters ✓ PDF, DOC, TXT or eBook ✓ Peter Frankopan The sun is setting on the Western world Slowly but surely the direction in which the world spins has reversed where for the last five centuries the globe turned westwards on its axis it now turns to the east For centuries fame and fortune was to be found in the west in the New World of the Americas Today it is the east which calls out to those in search of adventure and riches The region stretching from eastern Europe and sweeping rig. This is an engrossing tale well told I have the hard copy the e copy and the audible version and I have readlistened to the whole book which takes a while like the history of the Silk Roads There is undoubtedly some great research but the burning uestion is why has he left China out of the narrative till the last chapter It s fundamentally about the rise and fall of European powers Portugal Spain Holland Britain Russia Germany and the US garnished with a bit of the Ottomans Persia Iran and Afghanistan in the second section China really only becomes a topic in the conclusion the One Belt One Road which is the biggest development idea in modern history is left till the last pages and not even referred to by its name an afterthought There are passing mentions of China at times the Xiongnu Zheng He Kublai Khan Marco Polo etc but no discussion of the principal overland silk road through Xi an Chang an Dunhuang and Aksu the travels of Buddhism from India the transfer of technology silk tea and culture along these routes the mixing of races and customs Kashgar Xinjiang is mentioned briefly but there is no discussion of the Chinese ethnic occupation of it The Chinese are mentioned as great copiers and fraudsters in relation to porcelain but this is really simplistic it was the West that actually copied Chinese porcelain styles To get a rounded perspective of trade and cultural exchange I would suggest James A Millward s The Silk Road A Very Short Introduction or for a grounded political economy of the Silk Road Bruno Macaes The Dawn Of Eurasia On the Trail of the New Order

This is a thought provoking read assessing the past present and possible future influence of lands along the anvient trading routes It is strongly oriented to sociopolitical aspects rather than details of actual trading history That is the actual commodities are left somewhat generic rather than specific and indicative of trendsdevelopment of fabric uality Two way feedback about what European markets wanted vs oriental capacity to supply is relatively light on The future politico economic influences of the old silk road lands is brought into sharp focus and this book is all the useful because of this I found it a compelling read
