[Ted Williams: The Biography of an American Hero] Read ä bollywoodparks.co Not being a Boston Red Sox fan, I for decades had been denying the greatness (or trivializing it) of Ted Williams. This book changed that as fast as a Williams line drive whizzing past my ear. I went from denial to fan boy in a couple chapters. I am now a full fledged card carrying member of the All Time Teddy Ballgame fan club. The book is incredibly well written. Terrific insider stories and nuanced profile of the real legend. The subje

He may have practiced his swing as much as Horowitz caressed his piano. If the English language was a piece of dynamite in Churchill's mouth, the 32 1/2 ounce piece of ash he held in his grip created an explosion when it struck a horsehide sphere on its sweet spot.

Ted Williams became exactly what he wanted to be, claiming for all to hear, "When I

Williams was a complex, driven individual who sought perfection within himself often at the expense of alienating others. He was a "man's man" a military hero and a baseball hero who led a life where conflicts were plenty but admiration was just as commonplace. Montville's superbly reaserched biography captures the essence of Wlliams, all his positives and all his warts. Th

A little while back I picked up The Kid by Ben Bradlee Jr It s the massive almost 1000 pages biography he wrote of Ted Williams and I read it over the course of a couple of weeks and enjoyed it thoroughly I had my doubts about this book because well Bradlee seemed to nail all aspects of Williams charmed doomed life But here s the thing you can t really go wrong with eitherTed Williams The Biography of An American Hero by Leigh Montville is in many ways a fine companion piece to Bradlee s exhaustive work in that it s perhaps not as exhausting to the reader you might be a casual Williams or baseball fan and looking for less about the ghoulish aspects of Williams cryonics present almost twenty years after his death Really Montville came first published in 2004 and if this seems like a uickie biography based on publishing date alone don t be fooled Montville began work on it before Williams passed no rush job could be this entertaining and informative Montville delivers in ways that Bradlee would expand on with his later expanded workPerhaps it s unfair of me to compare the two because it might seem like I m damning this one with faint praise But I really ended up liking it a lot For the Williams fan who is put off by the sheer size of the Bradlee book Montville is a good alternative But I d heartily recommend reading them both Montville and Bradlee both do justice to their subject albeit in different ways Bradlee is exhaustive in some aspects where Montville brings a clarity and brevity to the same subjects Bradlee has the benefit of time passing to put some things in better perspective but Montville captures the emotions at the time and presents them in a way that is true to the moment Honestly I think both books should be on your list if you re a Red Sox or Williams fan
